Hobbies
There was a time when the concept of 'spare time' just didn't figure in my vocabulary. I worked 80+ hours a week and, when not at work, I was thinking about work. This could have been a side effect of working from home or could just be that I fundamentally enjoyed what I do (writing software).
That changed. I still enjoy my job and still write software but working 80+ hours isn't sustainable forever and, one day, I decided I should get a hobby. That's where the problem really hit me - I don't know what else to do with 'spare' time.
A long an boring story could be inserted here, but I know you don't want to hear it and I don't want to repeat it. Suffice to say that I now fill my spare time with four activities:
- Driving around aimlessly in my car (Honda CR/V)
- Reading Books
- Watching DVDs
- Collecting things.
I can't remember the last time I fired up the laptop and developed anything in my spare time. I still get the urge - regularly, in fat - but I've learnt to fight it off.
Driving around aimlessly is also becoming a problem - even though I'll getting 40mpg from the CR/V, the cost of diesel is beginning to bite.
